Title: “One Last Time”

What: 
My animation attempts to fill the viewer with wonder and nostalgia. The shooting stars, magical butterflies, and glowing grass all contribute to the splendor of the scene. The brightness in the middle of the dark night is intended to evoke feelings of joy and hope. This counteracts the melancholic tinge to the music that plays with the animation, creating a mix of joy and sadness that is similar to nostalgia.

Why:
This animation was inspired by the ending of a game I worked on with peers for Game Design II. The game ends with the two elves (who worked through the game’s obstacles together) spending one final moment with each other before they must separate to their own realms. The two elves can only hope that the gates between the realms will open again some day so that they may reunite. During the animation, the elves are in the magical realm of Mystia, where the night is worshipped and the landscape is constantly changing (hence the glowing grass). The magical butterflies are creatures that migrate to the gates between the realms for their magical warmth. With this in mind, the butterflies are a reminder of the nearby gates and the elves’ journey and so symbolize the liminal state of the elves as they get ready to separate. This symbolism contributes to the nostalgic theme.
